"Maybe one of these days we'll get you all the way there." He requires all the fond teasing she can deliver. They probably shouldn't even be as obvious as they are being now and yet she can't quite bring herself to care. This feels nice.

[beensolo]

Someone needs to bring the fond teasing so the mood doesn't get too heavy.

"It's not impossible." She's here, after all, and this easy, comfortable thing between them is growing. And Han is here. Ben and his father have a difficult past, but relentless and unconditional love has a way of overcoming old pains.

Han and Kitty are wearing away walls that were never meant to crumble. Happiness might be behind one of them.

It may not be the most positive or promising thing anyone has ever said, but it makes her smile because she doubts he would have admitted even that much a few days ago.

"We should probably be training." Which she says more because she's pretty sure she's going to kiss him or hug him or something if she doesn't.

[beensolo]

He wouldn't have. After so many years without this kind of support and affection, his outlook is changing more rapidly than he's strictly comfortable with.

"Probably." See how he isn't doing anything to make it happen? "My father wants me to teach Rey to block blaster bolts with a lightsaber."

She doesn't do anything to make it happen either. Her hand leaves his hair though and just settles on his arm instead. "Really? Is Rey okay with that?" No, wait, there is actually something more surprising here. "He's going to shoot at you?"

[beensolo]

"I doubt it." Rey doesn't want to learn from him and she's never okay with things that involve him. "I don't know how else he would expect her to learn."

Kitty, why are you confused?

"Well, yeah, but..." She's not sure how to word this. "I just think it'll be hard for him."

[beensolo]

"He knows he won't hit me." But he can see how this might bother someone like Han. Maybe it's similar to what he feels when he has his lightsaber out in his father's vicinity. "It would be kinder to have Rey do the shooting."

Joking, joking. Not really.

"I think he's probably worried about that too." And she knows hitting him isn't the problem. Not that she sees Ben as invincible. She did knock him out and Chewie shot him before that, but she figures demonstration shots are no problem.

[beensolo]

"She would refuse anyway. She was frightened when she shot at me on Takodana." Possibly because he was still a faceless monster who didn't so much as slow down in spite of her best efforts to stop him. The kidnapping that happened after that likely didn't sweeten the memory.

He's not invincible, but Chewbacca and Kitty owe some of their success to his emotional distress and the element of surprise. Taking him down should have been more difficult.

She does have a sense that the timing helped them get lucky there. Not to mention there were three to his one and her powers were unexpected.

"I wasn't there for that." And how different could things be if she had been? "But I'm guessing she had reason to be."

[beensolo]

It's just as well that she wasn't there. Now that he thinks about what happened there, he feels... guilty? Not cripplingly so, but the seeds of guilt are there. "She did. I abducted her."

[passingthrough]

"She might get over it eventually. Of course if you were sorry that would help." You know, apologizing. Being human.

You forgave her and Han and Chewie for abducting you, right? She doesn't actually ask just in case it's too soon.

[beensolo]

"I did what I thought was necessary." No, Ben, that isn't how being sorry works. It's not entirely true, either; he had been charged with retrieving the droid, not the girl. His personal interest in Rey was what drove him to do it; the thought that she would have the information that Snoke wanted was secondary.

Letting his personal goals interfere with his orders. Maybe Snoke's hold had never been that complete.

"Yeah, so probably no time soon then." She's not surprised by that response. She can't even bring herself to be disappointed in it. Maybe another week or three will change either his answer or her disappointment.

[beensolo]

That was clearly the wrong answer. Let him add something that will make it truer, if not better: "I thought that I knew her."

[passingthrough]

"You..." She looks at him curiously, not having expected that answer and not sure what it means. "Did you?"

[beensolo]

"Yes, I do." He sounds certain in spite of his frown. No elaboration is forthcoming. Sorry if that was something that was expected.

"How? From where? I thought she just lived on Jakku."

[beensolo]

"Not always. She was left there when she was a child." He pulled that from her mind. Rey didn't know who abandoned her and he can only think of so many ways to explain a force-sensitive girl who seems familiar and would have been dumped on an out-of-the-way planet when she was four or five.

There are a lot of things that happened then that he doesn't remember well.

"She told you that?" This doesn't seem likely. "You went into her mind? Forced your way in?" It feels like a bad pun.

[beensolo]

"I interrogated her." So yes. This is one of those things that they haven't talked about, isn't it? "She turned it on me. It was the first time that had happened."

He sounds a little impressed. Rey-related feelings remain complicated.

"It's invasive pushing your way into someone's mind." And it sounds like they'd done it to one another. Not that she'd fault Rey for it in the situation. But it would make finding peace hard. Tearing someone open mentally and making them vulnerable like that could be unforgivable.

"So how did you know her then? As a child?"

[beensolo]

"It is," he admits, and he finds himself regretting it. Not just with Rey specifically, but with the many prisoners he had interrogated for Snoke and the First Order. He hadn't invaded their minds gently. It's an unpleasant experience to be on the receiving end of. "Thoughts can be hidden, but if you're untrained or taken by surprise..."

Very few things remain a secret.

He's still incredibly evasive on the topic of how he knows Rey, and not just to Kitty. His mind doesn't want to rest too long on the subject. "I knew a girl when I was training." If it wasn't her, then his feelings and the universe are playing a trick that isn't at all funny.

She's not going to start holding specific things from his past against him now when he's opening up to her. They won't always be easy to hear, but every day he gets a little further from the person who committed them. The fact he can agree that it's invasive is something. If she knew he even regretted it that would be so much more.

"Rey was in training?" Is that what he's saying? "I thought she didn't even know she had this power."
